Universal Music Group (UMG) removed its songs from TikTok because it failed to reach a payment, AI, and online security agreement with the social media platform. UMG accused TikTok of paying too low a rate to use its extensive music catalog, and not protecting the rights and interests of artists and songwriters.
From the investigation results, UMG and TikTok had problems since January 2024, when their license agreement expired and no new deal was reached. UMG demanded higher payments and better protection for their artists and songwriters, while TikTok rejected the offer. The removal of UMG songs from TikTok was done starting February 1, 2024.
Some of the artists affected by UMG’s decision are Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, Drake, Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Justin Bieber, Adele, BTS, and many more. Their songs are no longer available in TikTok’s Public Music Library, and videos that use their songs will be muted. This of course affects the creativity and popularity of TikTok users who often use songs from UMG artists.
