Canadian rapper Tory Lanez has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for shooting fellow hip hop star Megan Thee Stallion in the feet in 2020. The incident occurred after a party in the Hollywood Hills, where the two artists had an argument in a car. Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, fired several shots at Megan Thee Stallion, whose real name is Megan Jovon Ruth Pete, as she tried to get out of the vehicle. She suffered injuries that required surgery to remove bullet fragments from her foot.
Lanez was convicted of three charges related to the shooting in December 2020: assault with a semiautomatic firearm, carrying a loaded unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharge of a firearm with gross negligence. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and claimed he was innocent. He also launched a campaign to discredit Megan Thee Stallion on social media and in his music, accusing her of lying about the shooting and being part of a conspiracy against him.
Megan Thee Stallion, who won three Grammy Awards in 2021, testified against Lanez in court and said she had been “tormented and terrorised” by him and his supporters after the incident. She said she did not initially tell the police that Lanez was the shooter because she feared for her safety and did not want to escalate the situation. She also said she felt betrayed by someone she considered a friend and that the shooting had affected her physically and emotionally.
The judge who presided over the case said Lanez deserved a lengthy sentence for shooting a “vulnerable victim” on a quiet residential street and for trying to humiliate and re-traumatise her after the attack. He also ordered Lanez to pay $100,000 in restitution to Megan Thee Stallion and issued a 10-year restraining order that prohibits him from contacting or coming near her.
Lanez’s lawyer said he plans to appeal the sentence and maintains his client’s innocence. He said Lanez was a victim of a “media circus” and that there was insufficient evidence to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
The shooting sparked a public outcry and a wave of support for Megan Thee Stallion, who has been praised for her courage and resilience. She has also used her platform to advocate for women’s rights, Black lives, and gun violence prevention. She recently released a new album titled “Something For The Hotties”, which features songs inspired by her personal experiences and challenges.
