Olivia Rodrigo is back with another hit single from her upcoming sophomore album “Guts”. The song, titled “Bad Idea Right?”, was released on Friday, August 11, along with a stunning music video directed by Petra Collins. The video showcases Rodrigo’s bad girl side as she leaves a house party and goes on a rainy all-night odyssey to hook up with her ex.
The video starts with Rodrigo and her friends, played by Tate McRae, Iris Apatow and Madison Hu, having fun at a party. Rodrigo then receives a phone call from her ex, who wants to see her again. She decides to ditch the party and hop into the back of a pickup truck with him, despite knowing that it’s a bad idea. The truck drives through the dark and rainy streets, passing by neon signs and billboards that spell out the lyrics of the song.
Rodrigo sings about how she hasn’t heard from her ex in months, but he’s calling her now that he’s alone and sensing some undertones. She admits that she loved him truly, but he lied to her without flinching and sold her for parts as he sunk his teeth into her. She compares him to a bloodsucker, a famefucker and a goddamn vampire who can’t love anyone because he doesn’t have a heart.
The video also features scenes of Rodrigo crowd surfing at a concert, dancing in a diner and smashing a car window with a baseball bat. She displays a range of emotions, from anger to sadness to regret, as she reflects on her toxic relationship. The video ends with Rodrigo and her ex kissing in the rain, before she pushes him away and walks off alone.
“Bad Idea Right?” is the second single from Rodrigo’s “Guts”, which is set to be released on September 8. The album follows her 2021 debut “Sour”, which featured the smash hits “Drivers License” and “Good 4 U”. Rodrigo has been praised for her honest and relatable lyrics, as well as her versatile musical style that ranges from pop to rock to ballads.
Rodrigo announced the single and video on Instagram, writing: “I had such a fun time making this song with @dan_nigro in nyc last year. we wrote the chorus as a joke but we loved it so much we made it into a full fledged song lol! I had a ball making the music video with my friends.” She also thanked Collins for directing the video and creating “such an incredible world”.
Fans have been loving the new song and video, calling it a masterpiece and a bop. Some have also noticed references to other pop culture icons, such as Britney Spears, Taylor Swift and Jennifer’s Body. Rodrigo has proven once again that she is one of the most talented and exciting artists of her generation.
