Las Vegas police have executed a search warrant at the home of a woman who is married to a self-proclaimed witness to the 1996 shooting of rap legend Tupac Shakur. The warrant, obtained by CNN [span class="sorot"]1[/span], names Duane Keith Davis, also known as “Keffe D”, and shows police were looking for items that could reveal the motive or identity of the shooter, such as photographs, letters, diaries, and documents related to TV shows, documentaries, books, and movies about Shakur’s death.
Shakur was gunned down on September 7, 1996, while leaving a boxing match at the MGM Grand hotel on the Las Vegas Strip. He was in a car with former Death Row Records CEO Suge Knight when a white Cadillac pulled up beside them and began firing out of the back window. Shakur died six days later from his injuries. No one has ever been arrested or charged for the shooting, partly because witnesses refused to cooperate with investigators [span class="sorot"]2[/span].
Davis, who is a cousin of Orlando Anderson, a suspect in the shooting, has claimed in several interviews that he was in the car with Anderson and two other men when they spotted Shakur and Knight on the night of the shooting. He said he heard one of them say “Got 'em” after firing at Shakur’s car. However, he has never revealed who pulled the trigger or why they targeted Shakur.
Police seized several items from the home of Davis’ wife, Paula Clemons, on Monday, including tablets, an iPhone, computers, USB and hard drives, photographs, magazines, and books. They also found “purported marijuana” at the property. It is unclear what prompted the search warrant or whether any of the items are related to Shakur’s murder.
Shakur’s fans have been waiting for more than 25 years for justice and closure in his case. The rapper, who was 25 when he died, is widely regarded as one of the most influential and versatile artists of all time. He has sold over 33 million albums and has had five No. 1 albums, including three posthumous releases [span class="sorot"]3[/span]. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in June this year.
