Lavender Darcangelo, a 27-year-old singer who is blind and has autism, stunned the judges and the audience with her powerful voice on America’s Got Talent. She performed “Out Here on My Own†by Irene Cara and received a standing ovation from everyone, including Simon Cowell, who is known for his harsh criticism.
Heidi Klum was so moved by Lavender’s performance that she hit her Golden Buzzer, sending her straight to the live shows. “I just fell in love with you,†Klum told Lavender. “You have such a beautiful voice and you sang with so much emotion. You are amazing.â€
Lavender was accompanied by her adoptive mother, Lisa Darcangelo, who is also her music teacher. Lisa revealed that Lavender was born prematurely and suffered from a brain bleed that caused her blindness and autism. She said that Lavender was in foster care until she was four years old, when Lisa decided to adopt her.
Lisa said that music was Lavender’s passion and therapy, and that she taught her how to play piano and sing. She said that Lavender had a perfect pitch and a photographic memory for music. She also said that Lavender had overcome many challenges and obstacles in her life, and that she was very proud of her.
Lavender said that singing made her feel happy and that she wanted to share her gift with the world. She said that she hoped to inspire other people who have disabilities or difficulties to follow their dreams.
The other judges also praised Lavender for her talent and courage. Howie Mandel said that she had a “star quality†and that he loved her story. Sofia Vergara said that she had a “beautiful voice†and that she was “very braveâ€. Simon Cowell said that he was “blown away†by her performance and that he felt a “real connection†with her.
Lavender is the fourth contestant to receive a Golden Buzzer this season, following singer Jimmie Herrod from Sofia Vergara, singer Brooke Simpson from Howie Mandel, and World Taekwondo Demonstration Team from Terry Crews. There is only one Golden Buzzer left, which belongs to Simon Cowell.
