Abdel-Majed Abdel Bary, a former British rapper and suspected ISIS militant, was found dead in his prison cell in Spain on Wednesday, July 26, 2023. The cause of death is yet to be confirmed by the authorities.
Abdel Bary, also known as Lyricist Jinn and L Jinny, was born in London on June 16, 1991. He was the son of Adel Abdel Bari, an Egyptian terrorist who was convicted for his involvement in the 1998 US embassy bombings in Africa and his links to al-Qaeda leaders Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri.
Abdel Bary started his music career in 2011, releasing rap songs online about his life in London, his father’s arrest and extradition, and his views on social issues. He appeared on SBTV Warmup Sessions and was part of a rap group called The Black Triangle.
However, in 2013, Abdel Bary left London and joined an al-Qaeda faction and later ISIS militias in Syria. He became notorious for posting pictures of himself holding a severed head and declaring war on the West on social media.
He was also suspected of being the masked executioner known as “Jihadi John†who appeared in several ISIS videos beheading hostages, but this was later confirmed to be another Londoner, Mohammed Emwazi.
In April 2020, Abdel Bary was arrested by Spanish police along with two other men after they crossed the Strait of Gibraltar from Algeria on a boat.
He was accused of leading a jihadist cell that used internet banking scams and cryptocurrency trafficking to finance their terrorist activities. He denied being a cell leader during his trial, which ended on July 14, 2023. He was facing up to nine years in prison and was awaiting the verdict when he died.
Abdel Bary’s death has raised questions about the conditions and security of Spanish prisons, especially for high-profile inmates. The Interior Ministry has launched an investigation into the incident and said it will release more details soon.
